It was fun seeing words (like cuneiform) I haven’t seen since 9th grade World History (and I’m 53, so it’s been a while!). I love learning about the Mesopotamian gods and goddesses, and the Muslim culture. What I liked: the writing reminds me a lot of the original Percy Jackson series (my all-time favorite series). Once he gets over his shock that the gods and goddesses of the stories he grew up with are real, he teams up with Belet, the adopted daughter of the goddess Ishtar, and Gilgamesh (yes, that Gilgamesh) to find the flower of immortality before the bad guys destroy his city. Then one day, he is attacked by Nergal, a Mesopotamian god, who believes Sik has the secret to eternal life. Sik is a 13-year-old Iraqi kid who just wants to help his parents in the family deli. I’ve read several of the Rick Riordan presents books and this one is my favorite so far.

are two of the best writers writing today. ★“Will have readers simultaneously laughing, crying and singing at the top of their lungs.”- Kirkus Reviews, starred review so funny, rude and original that by the time flowers hit the stage, even the musical-averse will cheer.” - The New York Times Book Review “ Will Grayson, Will Grayson is a complete romp. Hilarious, poignant, and deeply insightful, John Green and David Levithan’s collaborative novel is brimming with a double helping of the heart and humor that have won them both legions of faithful fans.Ī New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice As their worlds collide and intertwine, the Will Graysons find their lives going in new and unexpected directions, building toward romantic turns-of-heart and the epic production of history’s most fabulous high school musical. One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, two teens-both named Will Grayson-are about to cross paths. Two award-winning and New York Times–bestselling author join forces for a collaborative novel of awesome proportions. How was the collaboration for Teen Titans: Raven? That was the most exciting thing-I had never before been able to work with an artist like Gabriel who interpreted my vision. Then Gabriel Picolo, my illustrator, brought his ideas to the table. I already knew Raven was cool, but now I was going to write my own take on her. I really like playing in someone else’s sandbox with characters I love. Michele and I talked she said they needed someone to write about the Teen Titans, and I thought that was great. She also mentioned that Michele Wells, our editor, was interested in me. My friend Danielle Paige, who wrote Mera: Tidebreaker for DC, mentioned the opportunity. How did you transition from writing novels to graphic novels? Below, follow my conversation with Kami Garcia, where we discuss her latest release, her writing process, and her experience transitioning into graphic novels. Beautifully rendered and completely absorbing, this graphic novel is one of many to be released by Garcia. Kami Garcia, author of the bestselling Beautiful Creatures series, brings young readers yet another equally romantic and action-packed story with her first graphic novel, Teen Titans: Raven. I was able to get past that for the sake of the story, but I had a much more challenging time with the way all of the starch seemed to be wrung out of Adam's character. I do understand the author wanted to transition from the unresolved sexual tension between Adam and Mercy to having them in a "mated" relationship however, that transition seemed almost as forced as the annoying "is-it-Adam-or-Samuel-or-Stefan" dynamic that had been playing out for the first three books. I am REALLY hoping the next novel in the series is better, though, and the characters are more on track with what I've come to expect. My major complaint is the characterization of Adam, and the development of the relationship between Adam and Mercy. I enjoy the universe Patricia Briggs has created and I'm already invested in Mercy's story, so I'm glad I didn't bypass this one. Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not? My first disappointing Mercy Thompson book Until he happens upon a child’s headless body while out exploring, and he and the villagers are forced to wonder whether the fabled Horseman has returned. Ben spends his days helping Brom on the farm and playing games in the woods, living quietly in the Hollow. Henry picks the story up 30 years after the Headless Horseman chased Ichabod Crane from town and introduces us to 14-year-old Ben Van Brunt, grandson of Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel. Because her latest release, Horseman, is a mesmerizing, creepy, and (surprisingly) poignant continuation of Washington Irving’s classic tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Leave all the lights on in my house and raise my electric bill, yes.īut cry tears of sorrow and awe from the emotional resonance of the writing in a horror novel?Ĭhristina Henry brought forth my tears, though. Yetu however, has a fragile constitution, and so this task, this weight she carries that has stripped her of any individual identity, is killing her.⠀ To be a Historian means experiencing every single memory as if it was your own. A responsibility that falls on Yetu, our delicate and long-suffering main character.⠀ In order to thrive despite the suffering, it was decided long ago that one of their people - a Historian - should carry the burden of their history and collected memory. For good reason - they are a people descended from the pregnant African women who were thrown overboard during the slave trade, their unborn babies granted new aquatic life by the ocean. My experience has shown that children are more accepting of it when it’s presented in that way.” All of those things help them understand the importance of being a good person without telling them directly, ‘You have to do this.’ It’s something they see within the story. Little ones hear those same themes over and over: never give up, be brave, be faithful, be friendly. Most importantly, Harner says, the book gives children examples of the type of person they want to become: “It’s important to know where you come from, but it’s also important for building character. It’s interesting to learn about what these children went through on the Mayflower voyage.” If you look up the manifest and the list of names, you can find them-the Hopkins family-on there. “Their youngest brother was born on the voyage, and they called him Oceanus. “The story touches on three children that actually sailed on the Mayflower,” says Harner.
